CFL 2010.11.06: Lions 23 – Tiger-Cats 21

I have to hand it to the Cats – they’ll make their second post season appearance in two years straight. They’re definitely a much better team than a few years ago, but after attending this game against the BC Lions, I can’t help but wonder if they have the ‘killer instinct’ to put teams away for good. I think they’re close, but not quite there. They could have done it to the Lions, but didn’t, leaving just enough daylight for them to claw back with a game winning field goal late in the game.

In a somewhat rocky game the Cats D put a lot of hurt on QB Travis Lulay, yet he was still able to get off passes to his receivers for TDs when it counted. Granted it’s the nature of CFL that makes covering the pass fairly difficult, but the Cats’ offence didn’t help the situation late in the game with dropped passes. There were a number, including deep ones to receivers Willie Thornton and Maurice Mann – just enough to take some of the sparkle off Mann’s two TDs, including a spectacular single handed TD grab (the photo above)… And Glenn’s intercepted pass near the goal line in the third quarter also didn’t help.

As always, more photos from this game and others can be seen at my CFL/Tiger-Cats photo archive.

In chronological order some of my better photos from the game:

Cats defensive back Dylan Barker intercepts a pass intended for Lions slotback Geroy Simon. This was one of those situations where I didn’t even see it happen in the camera. Barker was out of the frame and stepped in just as the photo was made. Needless to say, I was happy to see it while reviewing images after the play.

Barker returns the interception…

Cats wide receiver Dave Stala is tackled by Lions defensive back Anthony Reddick. Stala had another good game, including a TD, for which I was unfortunately on the wrong side of the field and only got the back of the play…

Glenn scrambles again for some yards.

Cats linebacker Otis Floyd puts the heat on Lions quarterback Travis Lulay..

Cats wide receiver Chris Bauman pulls in a reception ahead of BC Lions defensive back David Hyland.

Cats running back DeAndra’ Cobb takes a handoff from quarterback Kevin Glenn.

Cats defensive tackle Jermaine Reid tackles Lions running back Jamal Robertson.

Cats linebacker Otis Floyd sacks BC Lions quarterback Travis Lulay.

Cats running back Marcus Thigpen breaks a tackle by Lions linebacker Korey Banks for a few more yards…

Cats offensive lineman Jason Jimenez played a ‘clean’ game against his former team.

As mentioned, there were a few critical dropped passes by the Cats late in the game, including this one by wide receiver Willie Thornton…

And this one by Maurice Mann…

But the Lions were able to make enough plays, such as this pass to wide receiver Emmanuel Arceneaux ahead of Hamilton Tiger-Cats defensive back Jason Shivers, for a last minute field goal to win the game.

Good luck to the Tiger-Cats in their playoff match-up against the Argos on Nov. 14th!
